Mobile Money: Uganda and Tanzania ahead of Kenya

Mobile-Money

According to the GSM Association (GSMA), Tanzania passed in front of Kenya regarding the use of money transfer service by mobile.

In terms of subscription to the service, 44 % of adults are registered in the country against 38 % in Kenya.

In December 2013, the Tanzanian consumers generated a value of 99,9 million transactions by Mobile Money representing an amount of 1,8 billion.

In a country where only 14 % of adults use bank services, it is a colossal amount, estimated GSMA.

Several national actors of the sector explained the reasons of the success of the Mobile Money in Tanzania by the availability of the service on any type of mobile phone.

They think that the service is even going to generate now more income as the operators made their service interoperable, breaking the limitations that confined transactions on their only network.

According to Bank of Uganda, Uganda is now ahead of Tanzania and Kenya, is.

In 2013, the service generated 18,6 million transactions for a 7,2 billion dollar value.

Though left behind at present behind while it was leader not long ago, Kenya does not too much seem to worry about the growth in its Mobile Money sector.

Indeed, nothing is decided yet. With the arrival of three new operators of virtual mobile network directed only towards this service, the sector is subject to explode.
