Telephony in Cameroon: the dialing plan moving from 8 to 9 digits

Cameroon is adopting a new dialing plan. “By the end of the year, the dialing plan will move from 8 to 9 digits“, announced on Tuesday the Telecommunication Regulation Agency (ART).

This announcement was made on the eve of the starting of the new operator, Nexxtel, which expected subscribers should provoke the saturation of the dialing plan set up in 2007.

Besides, the ART announced the harmonization of prefixes at the various operators: 9 for Orange, 7 for Mobile Telecommunications Networks (MTN), 6 for Nexxtel and 2 for Cameroon Telecommunications (CAMTEL).

According to the figures from the regulator, the market of the mobile telephony in Cameroon counts at present about 15,2 million active subscribers for a country of 22 million people, with in pole position the South African MTN (8,7 millions).
