He was the very first to have declared that rape is used as weapon of war during conflicts in Democratic Republic of Congo. The works of Doctor Denis Mukwege are just rewarded by the European parliament. The Congolese gynecologist was declared on Tuesday, 21st October 2014, prize-winner of Sakharov Awards.
He never won the Nobel Prize for which he was nominated several times. However, his works are not ignored by the international community. Since 1999, Dr. Denis Mukwege is the owner of a hospital and Panzi Foundation that “repairs” life of women victims of sexual violence.
In Africa where these topics are taboo, Denis Mukwege is considered as a messiah. For several decades, he has been fighting against this weapon of war of which the international community seldom speaks about but which morally and physically affects the victims.
“Chemical, biological, nuclear weapons have long-term effects. For rape, it is similar! People apparently stay alive. But really, families, villages, societies are destroyed over generations“, declared Denis Mukwege.
The Sakharov Awards ceremony for the Congolese Denis Mukwege will take place in Strasbourg on 26th November 2014.
