Burkina Faso: Michel Kafando invested with power for 12 month transition

The president of the transition in Burkina Faso, Michel Kafando, was officially invested with power last Friday evening in Ouagadougou in the presence of numerous personalities among whom six Heads of States from sub-region.

The ceremony for the transfer of the powers with Lt Col Yacouba Isaac Zida took place at the sports center of Ouaga 2000 in the presence of the Mauritanian president, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, serving president for the African Union (AU).

The Ghanaian, John Dramani Mahama at present at the head of ECOWAS, the Senegalese, Macky Sall, the special representative of ECOWAS in the Burkinabe crisis, the Beninese Yayi Boni, the Malian, Ibrahim Boubakar Kéita and the inhabitant of Niger, Mahamadou Issoufou also took part in the ceremony.

The presidents of Ivory Coast, Alassane Ouattara, and Togo, Faure Gnassingbé were represented by their respective Ministers of Foreign Affairs.

After taking an oath last Tuesday following his appointment by a transition commission, President Kafando henceforth, is officially at the head of a period of 12 month transition.

Lieutenant-colonel Yacouba Isaac Zida who has assured the function of Head of State since the resignation of Blaise Compaoré on 31st October, was appointed last Wednesday as Prime Minister of transition.

According to the charter for the transition, the transit period will be over at the end of the presidential and general elections of November 2015.
