Banker Awards 2014: Ecobank Cameroon appointed the «best bank»

The Financial Times banking magazine, Banker, recently published the results of its “Banker Awards 2014“.

At the end of this ranking, it is the Cameroonian subsidiary of Ecobank, the Pan-African Bank, that was appointed the best bank of year 2014.

The announcement was made by the managing director of the bank, Moustapha Fall. It was during the second edition of the Kilimanjaro Top Managers (KTM) in Douala, a ceremony to encourage the managerial excellence in Africa.

He announced in his report that at the end of the exercise 2013, the assets of the Pan-African bank in Cameroon progressed by 27 % in 2013 whereas 23 000 new customers were registered.

Moreover, the profit by action almost tripled, moving from 13,1 % to 31,7 %, what allowed distributing about 150 % of dividends to the shareholders.

These performances derive from a “strategy in three dimensions, particularly the strengthening of the consumer satisfaction, the creation of a favorable environment to allow the employees to excel themselves and the assurance of returns on investment to the shareholders. Improvements in the first two dimensions allowed of boosting the third” specified the managing director of the Bank.

Ecobank Cameroun is the first bank of the country to have opened a special department dedicated to the Chinese investors.

The bank also plans to widen its clientele by enlarging its agency network to 33 and by setting up a forum on which the customers can express their concerns.

These are a number of assets that doubtless were worth to it this prize.

We always knew Ecobank was the best . Their Rapid Transfer service is superb for people living out of their home countries . We wish this same excellent service could be extended to Africa’s second largest economy- South Africa . Our numbers here are huge from all over Africa and we are getting desperate . Is it possible to open an Ecobank account in Cameroon from South Africa without flying to Cameroon ?

I won nearly 5000 pounds from Barclaycard because they failed to inform me that the PPI I had was invalid outside the UK.

  16. I subscribe to a service that supposedly monitors my credit history. I get a monthly report that includes their “Credit Score” but they say it’s different from the ecobank score. I’ve also been advised that there are “Numerous” credit score “Models” that lenders may use. Example: A car dealership may use a score different from a bank, a mortgage company, a department store. To me at least, this seems rather screwed up. My credit “History” and credit worthiness should be judged the same by any and all entities from whom I seek credit. In football for instance, the scrimmage line is the same for high school teams, college and professional teams. In my opinion, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau should Mandate sameness. Otherwise, the likelihood for fraud and abuse is built into the system.

This account must include a withdrawal penalty if funds are withdrawn in the first 7 days. The stated rate and yield assume that principal and interest are left on deposit for the entire term of the CD. Best rate (100 Highest Yields) accounts are offered across all 50 states.

  48. Hi I have tried making a claim against the Bank of Scotland which i had car finance with in 2006 and was settled 2009, however they claim they haven’t got me on record. I haven’t got the correct paperwork but my bank statements clearly show my direct debits to the Bank of Scotland with reference number which i gave to them, and i also got a copy of my credit report which clearly shows this loan. can they refuse my claim if they cant find my records on their system?

  49. The correspondant bank for Ecobank in the UK is GHIB – Ghana International Bank – a British Bank in London. Very competent.

  50. Kieran i heard it takes couple of days went you send money from from abroad to a Account holder in the Gambia and the banks rate are not good.

Many people now use Approved services limited they have good rate and its fast and reliable

  51. AGIB or TRUST bank using that banks IBAN number. That Gambian bank then needs my BBAN number to transfer the money to my GT bank a/c. Once set up it runs well.

I haven’t used it but you can get VISA and MasterCard’s you pre pay to top them up. You could give one to your Gambian friend and when money is required top up the card in the UK and the recipient can get cash from an ATM. More expensive but convenient. As far as I am aware you can only receive the amount paid into the card so no risk.

  52. who wants to send a Gambian friend some money. She has an Ecobank account. How would he go about it? Is it via moneygram etc? Tried finding some info but can’t. My friend thought he could just go into his Halifax Branch and pay it into her Ecobank but I’m sure that’s not possible. Am I right?

  55. The money made was from the idea that it was nearly impossible to make a valid claim against this kind of insurance. When a claim WAS possible, it was just as easy or better for the debtor to take other action such as “walk away” or “bankruptcy” instead – options which are even easier in this day and age regardless of the fact this is all obscured from the public. Remember PPI was nearly always about unsecured debt, not the mortgage secured variety which had life insurance rather than PPI attached to it. People didn’t need it then, and don’t need it now. All unsecured debts can be walked away from when you have no assets, and lose your job. Being in debt isn’t a crime, and never was, but non-payment of installments has been made by so many to look like a crime, the public no longer know what to believe any more. Debt management companies won’t tell you about “walkaway” and neither will anyone else, as it has to be worked out and implemented by the individual themselves.

  57. I do not know why it has take n the banks more than three years to integrate with ecobank and i doubt you know either or you would have shared with us. My issue is not on why the banks have not taken up ecobank . My “assessment” is that there is a bigger story here that you did not explore. Why has it taken this long, what was ecobank stance been? What are the conditions that Banks need to integrate? Does it create a level playing field? What about from the Banks point of view? As players in business it has to make sense for them.

  58. Yes Ecocash really works and for all the trolls who simply label someone who has something good to say for ecocash – go and troll somewhere else and actually try the system first!

  59. Government should take a stand on this issue and make a policy pronouncement on it. Mobile money services should be enabled across all networks and all banking institutions together with other financial services providers like all kinds of insurance.

  60. Ecobank again on news, na wa for dis bank issue.D bank wakes up and decide wat to do without do consultation, they sack der worker anyhow and d majority of d staff working in Ecobank are contract workers, some have stayed up to 10 to 13yrs yet no conversion. They kip employing nonn exprience staff for d non core as dey call it to train dem.pls wat is d minister of Labour doing? Are u not aware of dis inhuman at Ecobank? Pls do something Before dis Togo bank wil useless ur citizens witout any reason, all in d name of work.

  62. Can I make a claim against being harassed by PPI claim companies?

  63. The banks know who they owe money to. Put an end to this farce of people having to claim, or pay some PPI firm to do it, and just start sending out the cheques to the people you robbed.

  64. This is very unfair on Banks. I know for sure, majority of the claimants knew that they are signing for payment protection. It is a shame that Banks can not prove it

  65. These policies were wholly appropriate in the majority cases, where the borrower was in full time employment. The Banks should never have just rolled over and accepted the claims from the ambulance chasing lawyers, the rest of us will end up paying in the end.

  68. I used a claim firm to do mine, the key is to find one that doesn’t need paperwork and can do searches back to 1980 when PPI first started. The vast majority of claim companies can only go back 6 years which is useless if your finances stretch back further… And they need your paperwork which obviously I didn’t have from 30 years ago!! I got money back on a home improvement loan I had in 1986 that I forgot about! I paid 39% but got every penny and then some back I didn’t mind paying!

  69. The banks CAN prove that it was sold correctly by the the actual choice the borrowers made. They CHOSE PPI with associated extra costs. Why wouldn’t people have queried the cheaper non-PPI option?

  71. explained that we had just won a sweepstakes of over $500,000 from the Canadian arm of Publisher’s Clearing House. A phone number provided was called and a very re-assuring female voice confirmed the prize and said that the check was the first installment of the pay-out and once cashed (and cleared) would lead to the balance of the amount paid in full. The reason given for the small initial check was that it would be used to help pay the Canadian taxes on the prize and that we were being ‘advanced’ the amount out of the prize money so no out-of-pocket money was necessary. As my kids and wife jumped for joy and hugged each other before starting out of the house to deposit the check I stopped them and decided to call Publisher’s Clearing House. While my wife tried to confirm the prize through the ‘American’ arm of Publisher’s Clearing House, I noticed the check was drawn on an insurance company’s account in Pittsburgh, PA. My wife hung up the phone and dialed another number given only to find out that no such prize (for her) could be confirmed. A call to the Pittsburgh insurance company was greeted by a very surprised employee asking where we had got the check from and confi
