Successfully tried by China for the first time in 2006, South Africa has just marked a big step by doing its first successful transplant of penis of the continent. The transplant of the organ was done on 11th December at the Tygerberg hospital of Cape Town. The operation took nine hours. The penis used for the operation was taken from a dead donor.
“I got the privilege to have participated in this first successful transplant done the world“, declared professor Frank Graewe, Department Head of reconstructive surgery at the University of Stellenbosch (south-west), quoted by Jeune Afrique magazine.
South Africa as several countries of the sub-Saharan Africa, has the practice of circumcision in its culture. Prof. Frank Graewe and his team have started these researches in order to save life of thousands of little boys, victim of accidents from this ancestral practice.
The results of the operation are stunning. Contrary to the Chinese case where the organ was removed a few months after its implantation, the South African repaired penis normally works as previously. “We proved that it is possible. We can give somebody an organ as good as the one he had“, specified Prof. Graewe.
