In prelude to the summit of the heads of State of the African Union that took place this weekend in South Africa, the president of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, invited his peers of the continent to say no to foreign aid.
For the president whose relations with the West are not the warmest, foreign aid will neither help develop the African continent nor grant it freedom.
Foreign aid “often includes clauses and conditions that prevent from progress (…) It is high time we said no to it“, declared the Kenyan President last Friday on his Twitter account.
Uhuru Kenyatta has been ruling Kenya since 4th March 2013. In 2012, the International Criminal Court indicted him for crimes against humanity, committed during the post electoral violence following the presidential election of 2007. The court finally decided to abandon criminal charges against him in 2014.
