Born on 27th August 1941 and died on 17th December 2011, Cesária Évora stays an icon in the mind of the Cape Verdeans.
As for proof, the world-famous Cape Verdean singer is just immortalized on the new bank notes of 2000 escudos in Cape Verde.
Previously, her country where she was born paid her tribute with a series of three stamps issued in 2003 and by giving her name to the Airport of Mindelo near which is standing a statue of the singer.
With her rasping voice, she made the Morna, music in Cape Verde, popular at the world general public. She had a career of recording and performances of 54 years from 1957 to 2011.
According to Wikipedia, she was nicknamed « The Diva in bare feet« , nickname due to her habit of going on stage barefoot.
During her career, she mainly sang in her mother tongue, in the Cape Verdean Creole, but in French also, whence the title of her song, « La Diva aux pieds nus » (The Diva in bare feet).
She got the opportunity to perform in the famous rooms of the world, of which the Olympia in Paris.
In 2009, Cesária Évora was raised to the rank of the Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by Christine Albanel.
The Cape Verdean government intends to acquire the house of Cesária Évora in Mindelo and change it into museum dedicated to the diva.
In her album, Racine Carrée released in August 2013, the Belgian artist, Stromae, paid tribute to Cesária Évora in his song, Ave Cesaria.
On 18th June 2014, the Council of Paris decided to pay tribute to the singer by giving her name to a place of the future area, Macdonald in the 19th district.
Her travel to Seine-Saint-Denis gave her name to a second school of Montreuil. So many tributes to this iconic figure of the African continent, honors that will certainly please her in her afterlife.
Cesária Évora will always be present in the minds with her hit, Sodade.
