34th SADC Summit: Robert Mugabe at the head of the organization

The 34th summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) will be held from 17th to 18th August in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

This meeting is preceded by the SADC Council of Ministers’ meeting planned on 14th and 15th August.

According to the SADC executive secretary, Stergomena Lawrence Tax, the summit will be marked by the election of the Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe at the head of the regional organization.

It is his Malawian counterpart, Peter Mutharika who is the outgoing chairman of the organization.

This annual meeting is a platform allowing the block of the 15 members that form the SADC to examine and review its integration program.

According to the SADC executive secretary, the summit will take into account several reports, particularly the one of the outgoing chairman of the organization, another one dedicated to the regional strategic development plan and the third one concerning the SADC court.

The summit will also work on the political and socioeconomic situation in the region as well as the global economic situation. It will also be matter of the SADC economic performance, genre and development, food safety and HIV / AIDS situation.

Important activities will mark the event among which the publication dedicated to the fight for national freedom in Southern Africa. A document dedicated to the statistics in the region will also be launched on this occasion.

We also expect that the summit reviews the situation in the Middle East and reaffirm its solidarity to the Palestinian people.

Let us note that the opposition leader in Zimbabwe, Morgan Tsvangirai, showed his will to meet the heads of State taking part in the summit in Zimbabwe.
