Eastern Film Festival of Geneva: 9 Algerian movies in the program

The kick-off of the tenth International Eastern Film Festival of Geneva (FIFOG, from 20th to 29th March) was given on Friday evening with the projection of the movie « Land of Absence – Meeting Adonis » by the Dutchman, John Albert Jansen, a documentary dedicated to the famous Syrian poet, Ali Ahmed Saïd Esber alias Adonis.

More than 100 movies moving from full-length fiction films to short films including documentaries are on the program of the FIFOG 2015 that celebrates its tenth anniversary this year.

Chaired on an honorary basis by Adonis, the festival is dedicated to Tunisia, country recently struck by terrorist attacks that saddened it.

Nine Algerian movies are in the program of the Festival placed under the theme « Film code for love » through which the organizers intend « to answer to hatred by love, violence by art, inhumanity by poetry ».

Among these movies, six are in official competition, one in the category of full-length films, two in short films and three others in documentaries.

In the category full-length films, the festival-goers have the opportunity to watch « L’ Oranais » (2014, in official competition) by Lyès Salem and « Cinéma Chkoupi » (2013) by Bahia Allouache, whereas in the short films, four movies are planned for them. They are « Le beau frère » (2014, in competition) by Hassan Belaid, « Regards » (2014, in competition) by Noureddine Kebaili and « Yidir » (2012) and « Koceila » (2013) by Tahar Houchi, art director of the FIFOG.

As for the documentary category, the film goers will watch three Algerian movies registered in official competition, namely « 10 949 femmes » (2014) by Nassima Guessoum, « Chroniques équivoques » (2013) by Lamine Amar Khodja and « El Oued El Oued » (2014) by Abdenour Zahzah.

Besides, the documentary by the French – Algerian, Rachid Oujdi « Perdus entre deux rives, les chibanis oubliés » (France, 2014) is also in the program of the festival whereas the Algerian singer, Djura of the Algerian group established in France, « Djurdjura » and his fellow countryman the singer-songwriter, Kamel Hamadi are members of the jury Full-length film.

Debates, colloquiums, conferences concerning several themes particularly on « The Eastern world in all its aspects », « Voices and women’s visions », « crossed Looks: Swiss-East », « Migrations and integrations », « cinemas and underestimated cultures » are also in the program of this annual cultural event.
