For the first time since the outbreak of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, a medicine administered to sick persons showed « encouraging » results with a reduction of the mortality.

This Japanese antiviral treatment, the favipiravir, worked out by a subsidiary of Fujifilm, was tested on 80 sick of Ebola in Guinea and the preliminary results are rather positive, declared the national Institute of health and medical research (Inserm) that supervised this clinical trial.

But the scientific results were not detailed nor officially published by the French Institute for health and medical research.

« The encouraging results of the test will be very quickly submitted to a scientific editor for publication and published according to the scientific communication usual methods« , specified Inserm.

Within the framework of a clinical trial, it is the first time that a treatment shows efficient signs against this terrible virus that caused about 9.000 deaths since the outbreak of the epidemic in West Africa (December 2013).

The test was carried out in the partnership with researchers and the authorities of Guinea with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) – (Doctors Without Borders),Alima NGO and the French Red Cross. It began on 17th December 2014 in the MSF treatment center situated at Guéckédou (South of Guinea).

The Japanese antiviral treatment was administered to 80 sick adults and children, specified the Elysee after the presentation of these preliminary results, on Wednesday, to the President of Republic.

« The results obtained are encouraging. They show a reduction of the number of deaths in the adults and teenagers having a low multiplication of the virus. The cure is accelerated« , indicated the Elysee in a communiqué.

« These results arouse a reasonable hope and open new perspectives for the access to a treatment in the fight against the disease but a validation for the largest number of patients is necessary« , added the Elysee.

The chairman of the Inserm, Yves Lévy and Jean-François Delfraissy, the French coordinator of the fight against Ebola, had to meet last Thursday the Guinean President, Alpha Condé, in order to discuss about the results.
