Ebola: Pr. Muyembe receives Christophe Mérieux Prize

Wayeno] – On Tuesday, 26th May 2015, the Christophe and Rodolphe Mérieux foundation in France awarded the Christophe Mérieux Prize 2015 to the Congolese doctor Jean-Jacques Muyembe of the national institute for biomedical researches (INRB). His award for 500 000 euros encourages his research works on the Ebola infectious disease of in the basin of Congo.

Pr Muyembe contributed to the discovery of the Ebola virus hemorrhagic fever (FHVE) and had been the first researcher to visit the site of the very first epidemic that broke out in 1976 in Yambuku, Democratic Republic of Congo.

He has afterward undertaken epidemiological and biological researches that resulted in the development of Ebola control measures used for the management of epidemics in Africa. His researches and works on the transfusion of convalescents’ blood of Ebola constitute the beginnings of an anti-Ebola serotherapy in progress at present.

The researcher has besides contributed to the management of the Ebola epidemic that has raged in West Africa since January 2014.

Pr Muyembe is today managing director of the national institute for biomedical research (INRB) of Kinshasa. The prize will be delivered to him on 3rd June at the Institute of France in Paris.
