Fight against hunger: Morocco rewarded by FAO

Efforts of Morocco regarding fight against hunger are recognized by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

On the occasion of the opening ceremony last Thursday of the 9th edition of International fair of agriculture of Morocco (SIAM-2014) which is held from 24th April 3rd May 2014 in Meknes, the UN organization awarded a prize to the country, placing it so in the list of countries which achieved in advance, the Millennium objectives related to fight against hunger.

This award given to the Prince of Morocco, Moulay Rachid by Graziano Da Silva, Managing director of FAO, aims at congratulating the Kingdom to have realized, two years in advance, OMD related to fight against hunger.

Organized under the High patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this 9th fair centred under the theme « Local products« , knew the presence of Malian president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Guinean Alpha Condé.

The fair that got this year the participation of more than 1.000 exhibitors representing 50 countries of various continents, is the leading meeting of agriculture at the level of Africa for its surface, its number of participants, its professionalism as well as the million expected visitors.

The edition will articulate around nine poles and will include exhibitions, conferences and B to B, as well as competition of not less than 2.500 animals resulting from rigorous selections for SIAM 2014 trophy.

The fair is composed of 9 poles dedicated to the 16 regions of the Kingdom: agricultural and agro-industrial production, agro-supply, environment, agricultural mechanization, breeding, sponsors and institutional and international, with the development of a market allowing the discovery of local products.

Moroccan agriculture is an important economic sector of the country with 40 % of the population living on this sector. Farming sector represents from 15 to 20 % of global GDP and uses 80 % on rural world.

Food-processing industry of the country is fully changing and remains the first industry branch of the country. It represents 4,4 billion euros of turnover in Moroccan economy, that is industrial 30 % of added value.

Morocco ccounts 2000 companies operating in this sector, grouping near the third of permanent jobs of the industry branch, that is 103 000 people equivalent to 20 % of total of jobs.
