Ivory Coast will be in less than two years, the first African country to have a power plant fed by the biomass connected to the national network. Introduced by the Ivorian, David Billon of the Biokala company, the project will be realized at Aboisso, a locality situated at about one hundred Km in the east of Abidjan.

The new power plant will approximately produce 288 GWh of energy and will reduce the Ivory Coast energy dependence. According to the Jeune Afrique magazine site, the cost of the building of the power plant is estimated at 50 million euros.

The main partners of the project are Sifca (of which Biokala is a subsidiary), EDF and Bouygues. Sifca is committed to supply raw material that will help to assure the functioning of the power plant. Indeed, the project requires approximately 300 000 tons of biomass. Trunks and leaves of palm tree will be used in the production of the electrical energy. This material will not be difficult to find because David Billon and his family are shareholders of Sifca, the first producer of palm oil in West Africa.

According to Jeune Afrique magazine, Biokala aspires to continue the adventure somewhere else in Ivory Coast and even in other African countries where power plants from biomass are rare. Only Kenya would have one today.
