A new Prime Minister was appointed last 8th December by the Malian President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta.

This new appointment occurred further to the resignation of the former Prime Minister, Moussa Mara (photo) who was blamed for not having known how to guarantee the unity around the Malian president.

Modibo Mara is the one who will henceforth be the Malian head of government. He already occupied this post in 2002 under the Malian president, Alpha Oumar Konaré, and Minister for Foreign Affairs under the single party rule.

He recently was the envoy of the Malian president, under the title of high representative in the negotiations of Algiers.

This former primary school teacher thus succeeds to his predecessor, Moussa Mara, blamed for mainly having weakened the position of the government in the negotiations with the armed groups.

All started from his visit to Kidal last May. The journey caused the death 8 prefects who followed him.

Since then, the Malian army was chased away from the region. The fact that the government and the army do no more exist in these regions is also blamed on Mr. Mara.

The region is rather under the control of the armed groups among which are listed the High Council for the Unity of Azawad, the National Movement for Liberation of Azawad and the Arabic Movement of Azawad.

The scenario starts again.
On 5th April 2014, the Malian presidency announced the appointment of Moussa Mara, then Minister for the town planning, at the post of Prime Minister, as a replacement of Oumar Tatam Ly, outgoing.

In January 2014, while receiving the wishes from the Malian government, the president, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, nevertheless announced publicly that he renewed his confidence to the Malian Prime Minister. Four months later, he ended his functions.

On his appointment, Moussa Mara declared that he essentially had only one objective: definitively bring Mali out of the crisis. The non-compliance with this commitment was the cause of his dismissal from the Malian government.
