Tunisia finally has a new coach: it is the Belgian Georges Leekens.

The latter knows well African soccer: he was the former coach of Algerian national team.

He will take up his functions on the 1st April – it is not a joke… –

An official communiqué indicated: « An official agreement was concluded with Georges Leekens to become the new coach (of Tunisia) from the 1st April 2014 to the 31st March 2016.

He has a delicate mission: the selection just experienced a very difficult time, insignificant during the last African Cup of Nations, the team did not succeed to be qualified for the next world cup in Brazil.

The objective so is to work wonders in Morocco during the next African Cup of Nations.

Raymond Domenech, the former coach of the team of France was also evoked by the way.

« It is always an honor to manage a national team and it certainly took me enough time to restart. I had many offers abroad and in Belgium. But, in the end, several things pleased me: the contact with Tunisian Federation, the proposed challenge. There is a challenge. I have already enough experiences with national teams; with Belgium twice and Algeria. Coaching a national team is what suits me better. I think I have skills to set up a project in Tunisia. »

Les Aigles de Carthage were without official coach since the resignation of Nabil Maâloul and the interim assured by Ruud Krol in November, then Nizar Khanfir for the friendly match against Colombia.

As irony of fate, the timetable indicated that for his first match at the head of Les Aigles de Carthage, Leekens is going to meet Belgium where he was already a coach. It would be on the next 7th June, a few days ahead for the beginning of the World cup.

His biography:

International, he was nicknamed « Mac The Knife » in reference to his virile game and to a propensity to make tackles. He played 351 official matches and scored 6 goals with FC Bruges in nine seasons from 1972 to 1981, with as a record, five titles of champion and a Cup of Belgium.
In May 2010, he was chosen to become the new coach of the diables rouges.
On Sunday 13th May 2012, to the general surprise, Georges Leekens, informed that he signed a contract for 3 years with Club Bruges, abandoning therefore the selection of Les diables rouges. On 4th November 2012, six months after his commitment, he was dismissed from his post at FC Bruges.

On 27th March 2014, he signed a contract for 2 years with Tunisian soccer Federation in order to coach Les Aigles de Carthage for 25.000 euros as monthly salary.
