The Djiboutian Head of State, Ismail Omar Guelleh, chaired last Wednesday the laying ceremony of the first rails for the railroad at the Djiboutian side which is going to connect Djibouti to the Ethiopian capital town, Addis Ababa.

Financed by China EximBank at the level of 600 million USD, the project of this railroad of 740 km long is assigned to the Chinese company, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) that started the works at the beginning of the year 2014.

This first electric railroad connecting Djibouti to Ethiopia will be completely built according to the Chinese standards. Rails, carriages and the systems of road marking will all be made in China.

The whole process, from the conception to the supervision, including the construction, will also be assured by the Chinese companies.

The managing director of the CCECC, Yuan Li, explained on this occasion that the train that will run on this railroad will connect in seven hours Addis Ababa to the Djiboutian capital town, with 120 kph speed.

President Guelleh seized the opportunity of the ceremony to pay an emotional tribute to China which, he said, is a great friend and a major partner for Djibouti.

The laying of the first rails at the Ethiopian side started in May 2014.
