The World Bank wants to make of adequacy training – employment, a reality in Africa. The institution has just allocated a 150 million dollars envelope for the creation of the African centers of excellence in seven (7) countries of west and central Africa.

With African centers of excellence, World Bank wants to improve education quality of forward-looking disciplines in Africa. Domains of science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STIM), agriculture and health are concerned by the project.

A total of 19 centers will be created in African universities chosen on competition. Nigeria receives the big part of the financing (70 million dollars). Ghana (24 million), Senegal (16 million), Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Togo (8 million dollars each) are also concerned. Gambia is going to have a 2 million dollar credit and a 1 million dollar donation.

« Africa needs to forge its own solutions regarding research and innovation in order to buckle down to its challenges of development, […]  Yet, researchers’ rate in the working population remains excessively low: for research and development (R&D) for example, Burkina Faso and Nigeria have a ratio of 45 and 38 experts over one million inhabitants against on average 481 and 1 714 respectively in Latin America and East Asia », explained the communiqué of World Bank published on 15th April.

The African centers of excellence will allow African students to follow studies of quality without having to leave their continent. The concept is also beneficial for economic operators of Africa. They will not any more need to recruit foreign skills for the development of their economic activities.
