Who will succeed to Dr. Luis Sambo? The succession to the Angolan for WHO Africa regional office is opened.

According to the corresponding sources, the election at this post will be held next Wednesday in Cotonou, Benin, during the works of the 64th session of the WHO regional committee.

Five candidates among whom, four women, coming from Benin, Ivory Coast, Mali, Congo and Botswana are competing for the post.

We note the candidacy of the Beninese Minister for Health, Prof. Dorothée Kindé Akoko Gazard; Prof. Thérèse N’Dri Yoman of Ivory Coast; Dr. Fatoumata Nafo Traoré, former Minister for Health of Mali; the Congolese, Dr. Jean-Marie Okwo-Bele, the manager of the world program of vaccines and vaccinations at the WHO head office in Geneva and that of Botswanese, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, current acting managing director for the Program of WHO Africa Office.

In his mission, Dr. Luis Sambo works to strengthen valuable experiences and put himself a lot with determination and creativity to meet again the expectations of African populations.

He was reelected for a second five-year term for period from 1st February 2010 to 1st January 2015, at the 126th session of the WHO Executive Board (EB).

Portrait of the man

Born in 1951 in the locality of Lândana, province of Cabinda (far North of Angola), Luís Gomes Sambo is an Angolan doctor.

He is a holder of a doctorate in medicine got at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Angola and the Faculty of medical science of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa in Portugal and specialized in public health at Colégio de Post-Graduação Médica of Angola and at the Medical association of Portugal.

He at first joined the World Health Organization as team leader for inter country strategic support for Harare, Zimbabwe (1989), WHO representative in Guinea-Bissau (1990), leader of the unity in charge to coordinate the implementation of health For all strategy (1994), manager of development division of health systems and services (1996), managing director for the WHO regional office program (1998).

On 2nd September 2004, he was appointed as the WHO Africa regional manager by the 54th session of WHO Africa regional Committee. This appointment was ratified for a five-year term during the 115th session of the Executive Board from 17th to 25th January 2005 at Geneva2.
