Botswana: Ian Khama reelected

Ian Khama, the outgoing president of the Republic of Botswana is renewed at the head of the State for a new mandate of 5 years at the end of the general and municipal election held on Friday, 24th October. According to the president of the court supreme who proclaimed the partial results, the presidential party won 29 over 57 seats of the parliament.

Son of the first Seretse Khama, father of independence of Botswana, Ian Khama was vice-president of Botswana in 1998 before becoming president of Republic on 1st April 2008 after the resignation of Mogae. The next year, he was elected a president thanks to the victory of his Democratic Party of Botswana (45 over 57 seats) during the general election.

Ian Khama is military by training. He took his courses at the Royal Military Academy of Sandhurst before managing Botswana armed forces. The man is also the King of Bamangwato tribe since 1979.

The general election held on Friday revealed the progress of the new Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) that has become the main opposition force with 12 seats.
