The national election board (CNE) proclaimed Filipe Nyusi, the new president of Mozambique having won with 57,3 % of the votes at the end of the general elections kept on 15th October.

The candidate of the party in power (Frelimo) will thus replace the outgoing president, Armando Guebuza who has just ended his second and last five-year term.

According to a communiqué from the CNE on Thursday, the candidate of the opposition (Renamo) Afonso Dhlakma, arrived second with 36,61 %, in front of the candidate of the Mozambique Democratic Movement ( MDM), Daviz Simango 6,4 %.

Frelimo so won 144 over 250 seats in the National Assembly; Renamo and MDM complete the list with respectively 89 and 17 seats.

The chairman of the CNE, Abdul Carimo, considered the ballot as credible and invited the candidates of Renamo and MDM to turn to legal institutions of the country in case of protests against these results.

Renamo protested against the results, asserting that the elections was rigged in favor of Frelimo.

Born on 9th February 1959, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi is an engineer and Minister of Defence since 2008.
