Pushed aside for a long time by governing bodies or prevented according to the Constitution of certain African countries to stand as « candidates » during the electoral terms, women tend to change the situation in Tunisia.
Indeed, they will represent 47 % of candidates on electoral rolls during the next general election that will take place on 26th October 2014.
Besides, according to Tunisian Secretary of State in charge of woman and family affairs, Neila Chaabane (photo), « 12 % of these women are chief candidates« .
The latter supports that « women participation in the political life still remains modest and must be strengthened to guarantee the total equality between men and women, particularly at the level of the access to decision-making positions« .
It was at the opening of a seminar last Monday that Mrs. Chaabane made this declaration.
The meeting was centered on the theme: « women rights in electoral period and the place of the complete law in the fight against violence towards women and the girls« .
She bases her wish on an extract from the constitution that stipulates « parity and equality of opportunity » but she also thinks that it would « also set up mechanisms and means allowing applying these laws guaranteeing women rights and preventing them from any form of discrimination or violence« .
The chairman of the Independent Higher Authority for Elections (ISIE), Chafik Sarsar, declared for his part that « ISIE respected man-woman parity and alternation principle in the validation of electoral rolls« .
