Mamela Nyamza

What a nice career for this superb African woman born at a township of Gugulethu in Cape in 1976! Mamela Nyamza was trained in ballet dance in South Africa, then within Alvin Ailey School in New York. Today, she is offering a committed dance which she is showing all over the world.

She is making tour of the world with her kids of Soweto who did not live under the segregationist regime but who practise a festive dance. Mamela Nyamza dances alone with them. She calls out on gender relations in her country and continues to denounce violence in South African society; themes that she knows well. She is a divorced unmarried mother. And she was marked for life by the rape and the murder of her mother, « A wilful woman who was ahead of her time. Her tragic death upset my life from top to bottom, she declared; and urged me to question gender stereotypes in the South African society. » It was in 1999, year of birth of her son also. « He is always with me doing his homework or drawing. »

Mamela Nyamza created her company in 2008. « I do not believe that we choose to become an artist. Art is simply a way of being and living. It implies a duty: that of changing the world so that it becomes better. »

« My work is rooted in my life of South African Black woman, divorced unmarried mother, I work on human rights, racism, discrimination and all damages that children or women can face. »

In spite of her success, Mamela Nyamza declared: « Nobody told me that it was so difficult for a Black woman to become a dancer. »
