The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon announced on Friday the appointment of the Ghanaian diplomat, Mohamed Ibn Chambas at the post of special representative of the organization in West Africa.
He so replaces the Algerian diplomat, Said Djinnit, whom Ban Ki-moon recently appointed « a special correspondent » of the United Nations in Great Lakes, a region including Burundi, Uganda, DR of Congo and Rwanda.
At this post, Mr. Chambas will also manage the United Nations Office for West Africa, according to a communiqué received from the communication departments of the UNO.
At 54 years old, Mr. Chambas carried important diplomatic missions in the African Union for which he was executing a mission in Darfur (Sudan) during the last two years.
He was Secretary General of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States from 2010 to 2012.
From 2006 to 2009, he managed the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), an organization of 15 countries for which he was the Secretary General from 2002 to 2005.
From 1991 to 1996, he participated in the mediation led by the ECOWAS between war protagonists in Liberia.
Former Ghanaian Member of Parliament, Mohamed Ibn Chambas was Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of his country in 1987, then Vice Minister of Education from 1997 to 2000.
Mr. Chambas studied political sciences at the University of Ghana. He has a Doctorate from the Cornell University (the United States of America).
