Last Friday during a workshop for capacity building of the members of Parliament and social movements on the mining legislation of Senegal, the M23 (Movement of 23rd June) expressed its desire to see its country equipped with a mining legislation that does not violate the rights of the nationals in favor of foreigners.
For Mouhamadou Mbodji, coordinator of the organization of the civil society, the new Senegalese mining legislation must be a law of emergence: « we cannot allow on the basis of a law we pass ourselves for foreigners to reduce our populations to poverty. It is unbearable! The law we have to draft must be a law of emergence. And for that purpose, our natural resources products should first be beneficial to Senegalese« , declared Mbodji quoted by APS.
The M23 wishes the Senegalese were the major shareholders (51 % at least) in the companies established in Senegal. The movement also advocates a better compensation for landlords who have to abandon their lands due to expropriation.
The update of the Senegalese mining legislation is topical because the country discovered two promising oilfields in 2014.
