Born on April, 10th 1985, Barkhad Abdi is an American actor and director of Somalian origin. At the age of 7 years, he escaped war that decimated his country for Yemen. In 1994, he landed with his family in Minneapolis. In America, he was at the same time a limousine driver and mobile phone salesman.

« Captain Phillips » brought out in 2013 is the actor’s first movie. He successfully embodied Abduwali Muse the pirate of terror who hijacked Maersk Alabama in 2009. He was nominee for the best male supporting role Oscar in 2014 won by Jared Leto for the role of Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club.

Barkhad Abdi was elected, best actor in a supporting role for Captain Phillips by Indiana Film Journalists Association Awards in 2013. He joined the small list of Africains who made success in Hollywood.

In spite of his role saluted by all in « Captain Phillips », the actor only earned 65 000 dollars while the movie yielded 217 million dollars of receipts for a budget of 55 million. According to the site public.fr, he resumed his mobile phone salesman’s activity.

« When he was in Los Angeles for promotion of captain Phillips, he survived thanks to per diem [an allowance paid to expatriates] and products of Beverly Hilton, the hotel where the studio Sony accommodated him », reported The New Yorker.
