Madagascar: Candidate for the organization of OIF 16th summit

Antananarivo (Madagascar) has wished to host the 16th summit of the Francophony. The news was revealed by the Senegalese Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mankeur Ndiaye, in the press on Monday.

Member State of the International Organization of the Francophony (OIF) since 1989, the population of the Republic of Madagascar is 20 146 000 inhabitants spread on a surface of 587 041 km². French is the official language of the country. OIF indicated that the number of French speakers in the country is 4 029 000 in 2010.

According to the minister, Mankeur Ndiaye, Kosovo and Costa Rica expressed their wish to get the status of Observer State with OIF. As reminder, the International Organization of the Francophony accounts 77 States.

During the 15th summit of the institution that will be held in Dakar on 29th and 30th November 2014, the new Secretary General will be appointed. Michaelle Jean from Canada, Jean-Claude De L’ Estrac from the Mauritius Island, Pierre Buyoya from Burundi, Henri Lopes from Congo and Augustin Nze Nfumu from Equatorial Guinea are in the race for the succession to the Senegalese, Abdou Diouf.
