Gabon is appointed on Wednesday, 8th April 2015 to host the 31st edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2017). The country was competing with Algeria and Ghana. Expressing himself on the choice of Gabon, President Ali Bongo congratulated the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for its decision and « the seriousness of the file submitted » by his country.
« This choice is a success and a chance for our country. We shall thus all mobilize ourselves to welcome this prestigious African competition in communion and brotherhood« , declared President Ali Bongo.
For the Gabonese president, the organization of the greatest mass of football of the African continent in his country will boost the state economy. He evoked among others the sector of infrastructures, energy, communication networks, services and the tourism.
The 31st edition of the AFCON was initially planned in Libya. The country confronted with internal political and security crises, found it better to give up the organization.
