Air Algérie: two young African film-makers died in air crash

The young Malian film-maker, Bakary Diallo, the hope of the African cinema was involved in the air crash of Air Algérie occurred on 24th July 2014. The director of the short film « Tomo » took part in AfricaDoc in Bobo Dioulasso where he was trained in the documentary writing together with his friend Lorenzo Mbiahou.

The cinema word is mourning the death of the young Malian director, Bakary Diallo, who will not have the opportunity to show his talents. The tragic death of the young scholarship holder of the Lagardère Foundation who was studying at the Fresnoy national studio of contemporary arts (France) aroused reactions in his country of origin as well as in his training center.

« In the name of the Malian Government and the Culture World, profoundly moved by a so big loss, the minister addresses his sincere condolences to the tearful family while having a pious thought towards this eminent culture man. May he rest in peace« , declared the Malian Minister of Culture.

The French-Burkinabe journalist, Claire Diao, who knows well both of the passionate film-makers, paid them an emotional tribute. « Both of them were less than forty years old. Talented, they opted for a career in cinema. Both were rewarded at festivals. They had just pitched their new project. Both embraced people and said goodbye to them. Both were expected on arrival. One of them even had a wife and young children. Both were radiant. But both were reported missing today together with this plane« , she wrote.

As reminder, 118 passengers among whom 54 French , 27 inhabitants of Burkina-Faso, 6 Spanish, 6 Algerians, 8 Lebanese, 5 Canadians, 4 Germans, 2 Luxemburgers, 1 Malians, 1 Belgian, 1 Cameroonian, 1 Nigerian, 1 Egyptian, 1 Swiss and 1 Ukrainian were on board the divice of the Air Algérie company.

Born in 1979, Bakary DIALLO was certified for a Two-Year Technical Training in office automation obtained at the University Institute of Management of Bamako. In 2007 he launched himself in the multimedia Arts and Crafts Academy of Bamako. After three years training, he won the Foundation Lagardère scholarship that gave him chance to study in France. In 2011, he was prize-winner for the friends of Fresnoy prize with the Movie « Dankumba ».
