AU Summit: Ebola, Boko Haram and South Sudan on the agenda

The 24th summit of the Heads of States and Governments of the African Union (AU) opens on Friday, 30th January in the Ethiopian capital town, Addis Ababa.

About fifteen Heads of States takes part in this meeting among whom the South African, Jacob Zuma, the Cameroonian, Paul Biya, the Chadian, Idriss Deby, the inhabitant of Niger, Mahamadou Issoufou or the Guinean, Alpha Condé.

On the agenda of the debates, appear the hot topics as Ebola, Boko Haram and South Sudan.

In prelude to the summit, the African Union peace and Security Council, chaired by Alpha Condé, met on Thursday in Addis Ababa.

With regard to the fight against the Ebola virus, Alpha Condé presented several challenges to face by emphasizing on a « better coordination of the efforts, a more rigorous management of the means and a development of the sanitary infrastructures« .

The Guinean president moreover issued a new appeal to the international community.

Evoking the fight against Boko Haram, the Guinean president indicated at the Council that « It is necessary to take actions« .

« The time is for determination and mobilization of efforts from all the member states of the African Union. The African Union thus has unreservedly the obligation to support any initiative directed to eliminate the Boko Haram sect« , called out Alpha Condé.

The Union supports the implementation of a multinational force of 7 500 men, and set an ambitious goal: convince the United Nations to finance its military offensive.

The last big file concerns the situation in South Sudan that gets worse. The investigation report by the Nigerian former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, on the violations of human rights will be examined.
