The rooms for operators in car import are reduced in Algeria. Committed since 2013 in a protection policy of the national car industry, the Algerian government has just limited the imports of car brands approved by the government. From now on, car dealers can only import brands that appear in their tender documents.

In November 2013, the Algerian Prime Minister, Abdelmalek Sella made a commitment to discourage the import of cars that do not meet the safety and reliability criteria planned by the executive decree N°07-390 of 12th December 2007, fixing the conditions and the modalities of exercising the marketing activity of new cars.

The measure is successful. In 2013, car import decreased at 8,43 % in Algeria. Only 554 269 cars landed in Algeria against 600 000 in 2012. According to Jeune Afrique magazine, the new ministerial decree reducing the car imports was requested by the Algerian Car Dealers Association (AC2A). The latter considered that the proliferation of foreign brands in the country creates anarchy on the automotive market.
