Cameroon: the 4th mobile operator revealed

The Cameroonians looked forward to welcoming it. Contrary to all expectations, the fourth mobile phone operator is not new on the Cameroonian market. Cameroon Telecommunications (Camtel), the owner of the fixed telephony, announced its return in the universe of the mobile with the 3G license obtained last 26th September.

14 years ago, the historic operator of telephony in Cameroon, Camtel sold its 2G license to the South African MTN and satisfied itself until then with the operation of the fixed network. On 26th September, Camtel marked its strong return on the market of mobile telephony with a 3G license with duration of 15 years.

According to the management of the company, the new subsidiary will be operational from the beginning of the year 2015.

Before this date, Nexttel of the Vietnamese group Viettel had the exclusivity of the 3G operation in Cameroon. The company even wished the obtaining of the extension of this juicy contract. The Camtel mobile subsidiary will be managed by the Cameroon Mobile Telecommunications (CMT) created since 2006. The company is looking for a strategic partner for the operation of the license that could reposition Camtel on the Cameroonian market.

According to Jeune Afrique magazine, it only have 5,7 % of the market shares on the Cameroonian telephony market (fixed and mobile) behind MTN (57 %) and Orange (37 %).
