Suffering from eye diseases can become a real obstacle course in far distant zones of Africa when it is proved that the major part of ophthalmologists are found in the big cities.

« Vula » that means ‘open‘ in Siswati, Xhosa and Zulu, is an application that could be a mini revolution in the poor countries regarding eye care.

Set up by Dr. William Mapham, ophthalmologist at the Tygerberg hospital of Cape Town, South Africa, « Vula » allows health agents from everywhere in the country to do analyses to patients remotely and the results are spectacular.

Thus, these agents can do an eyesight test, photograph the eye and check the symptoms. Once this information downloaded, a specialist takes over by offering a diagnosis to recommend then a treatment or an appointment in a specialized center.
