The African Union is worried about the situation prevailing in Burkina Faso.

For sake of reassurance, the Chairman of the AU Commission, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, has just appointed the Togolese, Edem Kodjo, as « AU Special representative » for the « country of honest people« .

The objective is to strengthen the efforts of the organization in order to facilitate the settlment of the crisis.

According to Dr. Dlamini-Zuma, Mr. Kodjo’s appointment is particularly within the framework of fast implementation of a civil, democratic and consensual transition that must result in the holding of regular and transparent free elections as soon as possible.

For that purpose, Mr. Kodjo will coordinate the joint efforts of the AU, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the United Nations and the other concerned international actors.

Edem Kodjo has been, since last July, member of African Union « Committee of Wise Men » which role is to support the Commission of the AU regarding prevention and resolution of conflicts on the continent.

He assumed high office in his country (Togo), having mainly been Minister of Finance and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1976 to 1978, as well as Prime Minister from 1994 to 1996.

He also occupied the post of General Secretary for the Organization of African Unity (OAU), from 1978 to 1983.

He is besides the founder of « PAX AFRICANA » Foundation.
