Officially since this Saturday 26th March 2014, Ghanaian president, John Dramani Mahama, 55 years old, was elected at the head of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) during the 44th ordinary summit of the ECOWAS in Yamoussoukro.

He succeeds to his Ivory Coast homologue, Alassane Ouattara.

The outgoing president declared: « I am very happy to tell you that yesterday, my peers (…) decided to elect at the head of the conference of the heads of states and government of the ECOWAS, my brother and friend John Dramani Mahama, president of Republic of Ghana ».

John Dramani Mahama indicated to him: « Peace will constitute one of our priorities ».

Born on November 29th, 1958 in the North of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama came to power in July 2012 at the sudden death of his predecessor, John Atta Mills. Former parliament member and writer, he is a fan of Afrobeat music.

The ECOWAS represents fifteen States for a population estimated at 300 million English-speaking, French-speaking and Portuguese-speaking inhabitants. This space realized a strong economic growth in 2013, estimated at 6, 3 % against 7, 1 % planned for 2014.
