ECOWAS: John Mahama calling for peaceful elections in Nigeria

The Ghanaian president, John Dramani Mahama, also the serving chairman of the ECOWAS, expressed on Monday, 23rd March 2015, his wish to see elections taking place in peace in Nigeria.

He made this declaration at the end of a meeting with all the stakeholders in these elections, namely the outgoing president, Goodluck Jonathan, the candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, the chairman of the Independent National Election Commission (INEC), Pr Attahiru Jega.

« We ask you to allow Nigerians to express their votes in peace and make sure that their votes matter« , added the President of Ghana.

As a reminder, about 70 million voters over about 170 million Nigerians will go to the ballot boxes on next 28th March and 11th April to elect President of the federal republic, members of the federal parliament, as well as governors and members of States legislatures.

The ECOWAS thus has made a commitment to follow the electoral process of the member countries of the regional organization in an information and advice mission.

« Security in Nigeria is also security in the sub-region« , indicated John Mahama, in a message of solidarity towards the Nigerian people.

For his part, the chairman of the ECOWAS commission, Désiré Kadré Ouédraogo, underlined that it is essential « for all the political actors to avoid speeches of hatred or any action likely to arouse the violence« .

The ECOWAS serving chairman besides wished « the good example from Nigeria would inspire Togo, Guinea, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso that will organize elections this year 2015« .
