Grand-Bassam, the historic city of Ivory Coast and partner of AfriCap 2016 project is hosting from 7th to 11th October 2014, an international workshop on the management of constructions and rehabilitations in the world heritage cities. Introduced by the French organization CRAterre, the project participates in the valorisation of the African heritage resources for an effective contribution to local development and the fight against poverty.
Apart from Ivory Coast, Benin (School of the African Heritage / Municipality of Nikki) and Guinea (Urban district of Télimélé) will host the experimental phase of the AfriCap 2016 project the cost of which is estimated at 500.000 euros.
Trainings and sensitization activities are scheduled in order to put in network 25 decision-makers and professionals coming from African cities having in common their registration in the world cultural heritage (Benin, Senegal, Mali, Madagascar, Cameroon and Ivory Coast).
According to Robert Beugré Mambé, governor of the Autonomous District of Abidjan and 1st vice-president of the French-speaking Mayors International Association (AIMF), culture, « far from being the third wheel of the economic coach, is the first of all the wealth of a nation, he declared before suggesting a harmonious link between culture and tourism the first of which feeds the second and the second valorizes the first and the third refers to a conjunction of political will and economic interest« , he specified.
The Ivory Coast city of Grand-Bassam was the first capital town of Ivory Coast and it has been for a long time the first municipality of the country since 1914. In 2012, the city was registered on the UNESCO cultural heritage.
