Access to electricity should more be luxury in Ivory Coast up from 25th October 2014. In the framework of its vision 2020, Ivory Coast government will proceed on Saturday to the launching of the Electricity For All Program (PEPT). Eventually, 200,000 households will be electrified every year until 2020.

With 1000 FCFA (1,53 euro), Ivory Coast households can henceforth benefit from a connecting to the national electricity network. Government offers them a kit including connection, network check, circuit breakers, box set and power saving light bulbs.

According to the Ivory Coast Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Adama Toungara, it is unbearable that only 26 % of households have access to electricity in Ivory Coast.

« In spite of the fact that we have a coverage rate of 40 % and an access to electricity rate of 70 %, only 1 million 100 thousand families benefit from electric connection over 4 million households that compose Ivory Coast, or 26 % of consumers« , indicated the Minister.

This initiative from Ivory Coast authorities can inspire several countries of the sub-region. Indeed, access to electricity remains a luxury in the majority of African countries. Only big towns enjoy connection to national power network. With the emergence challenge that has taken possession of the continent, mentalities are soon going to change in order to bring electricity (development background) to remote populations.
